I am interested in the "not tracing a straight line in the backswing" comment. Are you refering to keeping the grip end of the club pointing at the target line or the shaft parallel to the line on the backswing? That is what I am trying to do. My practice takeaway is similar to the drill where you cock your left wrist where the shaft is lying parallel to the line and then go straight up to the top of the backswing.

Sounds like you might be trying to 'cover' the plane line, rather than 'trace' it.

get a couple small mag lights and tape them end to end, find a line to trace and let me know what you find.

I suspect you are getting out, over plane (steep) by trying to make your hands/club move too much 'on' (covering) the line, rather than back, up, and "in".
