My practice takeaway is similar to the drill where you cock your left wrist where the shaft is lying parallel to the line and then go straight up to the top of the backswing. Sounds like you might be trying to 'cover' the plane line, rather than 'trace' it. get a couple small mag lights and tape them end to end, find a line to trace and let me know what you find.
