Sounds like you might be trying to 'cover' the plane line, rather than 'trace' it.

get a couple small mag lights and tape them end to end, find a line to trace and let me know what you find.

I suspect you are getting out, over plane (steep) by trying to make your hands/club move too much 'on' (covering) the line, rather than back, up, and "in".
