Start up my own religion with a call in TV show and take money from the unsuspecting babyboomer set as they become incontinent.
NO, NO, NO! You are doing it all wrong. First, you don't have any short-term goals, second, and perhaps even more importantly, this seemingly has nothing to do with golf. Don't ruin my thread!

The reason you can't sustain the lag is because you are so eager to make the club move fast (a reaction to the intent of "hitting it far"). So on a full shot you throw it away too early, which doesn't happen for your short chip. (bts)
Improve every area of my game, by acquiring knowledge, testing it and applying what works for me. This includes:
Winter practice: Short game practice (putting, chipping, some pitch shots) indoors as designed by me. Something every day. Full swing practice at the range once a week with video to analyze and determine areas for improvement. This week's areas for improvement include adjustments in posture, focus on maintaining a steady head, experimenting with positioning the ball a little farther away to see what impact it has on plane, and a few other things.
Long Term:
To be the best player I can be, which includes becoming the best player of the "regulars" at my local course.
This requires smart practice (not beating balls), quality instruction, and effective application of the instruction by yours truly.
A ditch is a grave with both ends kicked out! B -A-L-A-N-C-E!
Golf must be in its place lest it become the MASTER! This from an avowed addict, of course! Many good amateurs who take the plunge automatically think their game will go to the next level once they can devote ALL of their waking time to practice and play.
20 golf balls hit into my impact bag in the living room achieves more than 500 golf balls on the range (in the old days.) I put the ball a couple inches from the imapct bag and take a full cut at it. Impact bag is low point...must kill it!
Pertaining to goals...there must be DAILY feedback. Activity without feedback is going through the motions. I grade myself each and every day! I need it more than most...without the glare of accountability I am a danger to myself! Goals programs fail primarily because people do not like accountability. Food for thought: if you cannot keep a committment to yourself will you keep one you made to someone else?...and if you fail to conform reality to your words ...are you a liar?
I remember (I think it was Gary Player) making a comment about Jack Nicklaus not practicing enough...something to that effect. I also recall Jack saying that he would stop practicing and go play once he "had it". The ball beating was not his thing, he was out there to fix something...once fixed he was "out." I like pounding seeds as much as the next person, but I make the distinction between recreational hitting (rakin' balls) and practice. Practice has an objective with a deadline! I have hit a thousand balls in one day (that was the idea!) unlimited range balls and adolescent time!
Next time you go out hit only the good range balls...like food on your plate leave the rest...if you cannot do it you are an obese range raker!
I did this last year. My goals are the same as mrodock's qualify for my state amateur and US Mid Am. I have played a lot of local tournaments...so here were my goals starting last year.
Break Par: Accomplished
Break 75 in a Tournament: Not accomplished, but broke 80 in every tournament round.
Break Par consistently: 2008
Break 75 in tournaments consistently: 2008
Break Par in a tournament: 2008
Consistently break par in tournaments: 2009
Qualify for state Mid Am: 2010
Qualify for state Am: 2010
Qualify for US Mid Am: 2011
As you can see I am behind schedule.
They are mostly scoring goals I know and maybe that creates too much expectation. Interested to learn what others think

7. Don't give up on no rounds.
8. Figure out a go-to tee shot when you are blowing chunks.
9. Play more golf.

I really like the way you made your stages to the ultimate? goal as incremental, I have neglected to think in these terms. I think the scoring goals are extremely important because they give you completely objective feedback on whether you are making progress toward your ultimate goal on the schedule you have set. This has given me a lot of clarity, thanks!
