What is golf (with apologies to Winston Churchill):

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

That is WC's description of the Soviet Union but certainly fits the Golfing bill quite nicely.

His description of Golf is

"a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose."

I take the word "weapons" to be all embracing and not just confined to inanimate items of equipment.
