To play Linville you have to stay at the Eseola lodge there at the course.(Quite pricey) A lot of the courses closer to Boone and Blowing Rock are just aerifying there greens as there season has really just started.

On the other side of Asheville, Maggie Valley is a great place to stay and play.
Between Asheville and Boone the best courses are

Reems Creek in Weaverville
Mountain Glen in Newland (very near Linville)
Boone Golf Club (greens were punched Monday)

Lots of good courses in the area but those are the best on the main drag so to speak. The muni course in Asheville is also a Ross design sees a ton of play not the greatest condition, but a very fun layout.
