In Toolish's situation- if he didn't straighten the right arm early and flatten the right wrist then he'd have to rotate more to get to impact. But at the same time- if he's trying to hit the equator or back of the ball- then he can't continue the pivot motion- so he stops it to let the clubhead pass or catch up to the hands.
