this is one of the specific drills prescribed with the whippy tempomaster training club. what application do you think the tempomaster has for learning lag, correct impact, etc., if any? is it more likely to benefit a swinging motion, a hitting motion, or both?

IMO, Hitting with a Whippy would be a disaster. The Whiippy is designed to be "pulled" through impact with the leading hand. It would be the equivilent of using the "axe handle" method to chop down a tree with your favorite flly fishing tackle!
