Hi Lbob, I think that most of us start like you did - definitely worth sticking to it...we all rush away from basic motion when we think we have understood it and mastered it...only then to go rushing back to basic motion when our driver suddenly starts screaming that we don't really understand...and back and forth...
But however you do it you'll become aware of your swing in a much more objective manner than is generally taught...you can fix yourself mid-round...and you can open up a new swing / hitting pattern and not be scared that you won't be able to find your way back to your preferred pattern...because if you know your components...you never get lost!
