Another interesting point is when you talk to a tour player about winning a tournament they always take you through the putt they made. For instance, I was working with a player that formerly one Memphis and we were on the 18th at TPC there. He gets over this 8 footer and says "I just tried to hit it in that direction"
There is definitely a "hit" in putting. Back in the old'n days the greens were slow and the ball softer, you had to "hit" the heck out of it. Nowadays the greens are faster and the ball harder so you still "hit" but nothing like then.
