McLean pays compliment to Lynn Blake, Tom Tomascello and Greg McHatton. Also includes some nice info on HK and Ben Doyle and TGM. A short read but very well done. Plenty of inside info on Hogan. Finished the book today due to excessive snow in Vail, CO that kept me off the slopes.

I can't imagine too much snow at Vail, which has current bases at all 3 levels of only 48". I discovered Vail in 1969 - a small Tyrolean style village, with ski school director, Roger Staub, 1960 Olympic Gold Medalist at Squaw Valley. The lift tickets were $5/day and former Austrian Olympic skier, Pepi Gramshammer, provided bunkhouse accomodations at Hotel-Gasthof Gramshammer for $10 a night. I bought a new pair of leather ski boots from German Manfred Schober's ski shop for $50 to use with my rented wooden skis. Schober was one of the ski instructors when Vail opened 50 yrs ago in 1962.

Ahh yes. Good ole double laced boots that need to be relaced every run... cubco bindings, wood skis with P-tek bottom and segmented edges. Torque your knee down on the fall line to hold an edge. Dem was da daze.

Cubco! I couldn't recall the binding maker - thanks. I am amazed that there is someone else here from the prehistoric leather/steel/wood/wool ski era. :laughing9

I have been skiing with leather shoes until recently! As long as the skis are good and the shoes have some side support you can get down pretty demanding slopes.

After a few years with alpine gear this brought back the fun of skiing. With interest. Much more ski feeling!

But next week I will go with super forgiving irons with plenty of offset (high plastic shoes and brand new carving skis) - in Steamboat Springs. I had to try them carving skis sooner or later. And getting old and lazy too....
