Tiger - Get a Grip!

I was watching some older footage of Tiger last week, from 95, 97 and 2000 and it was interesting to see how much he has changed.

His swing now:

His lower body/pivot is now much, much better.

His Rhythm, while better than a year ago, is not as good overall, even compared to his free wheel motion of 95. That said, the lower body motion is much, much improved.

His Grip - with all the good changes to his zone 1/pivot, if he moved back to his grip of 95 he wouldn't have to work so hard to time the clubface and could get back to free wheeling it. The grip of 2000 is perhaps more flexible re: shotmaking, but I personally think the 95 grip would allow him to not have to work so hard on each swing.

Basically an angled hinge swinger or 4 barrel hitter.

EdZ he weakened his grip some didnt he? He gets a literally flat wrist at Top now too. Are you saying you'd rather see a 10-2-B with a geometrically flat wrist at Top, is that right?

between 95 and now there is nearly a 45 degree difference in his left hand position

Yes, geometrically flat. It is the left arm wedge that matters.

Some may disagree, but I find the most 'natural' left hand position to be at approx a 45 degree angle to the ground (if you hold your left hand out in front of you). Pretty much the usual recommendation of the 'v' pointing to the left shoulder.

If you look at Homer's grip or Ben Doyle's grip they both have this more natural left hand position (although perhaps a touch stronger than what I would suggest for Tiger).

Tiger's left hand position now is exceptionally 'weak'. 10-2-A at best. That requires a lot more motion and timing, and even some arch at impact. It requires 'doing' something to square up the face.

I wonder when and why he made the change? Hogans LIFE Magazine secret but without the double cock maybe?

I'd have to guess that is what he has to do given his grip now, but his right hand 'hit' impulse gives him trouble. The only time it works well is when he is slow/smooth enough to let CF take care of things.

For the reasons to change, his old pivot motion was so forceful that he had no real control for creating shots can controling trajectory. It was all out, or nothing really.

Now that his pivot is better, he can get the best of both worlds if he moved his grip back.

Interesting observations EdZ.

Hitting, Angled Hinge with an arch at impact is probably going right. Ive seen him when practicing smooth driver after driver out there and wondered why he tended to "add" when on the course? In the old days he said he tried to speed up his arms to avoid getting stuck.......trying to outrace a stuck hip. The old two wrongs thing.

Yah I see your point he is still searching, but getting closer.......................its kind of scary how his best golf could still be in front of him. Im thinking he comes back with a vengeful and redemptive attitude too.
