Mayakoba Classic-Cancun
 

After Round One, Brian Gay is tied for 6th in this week's PGA event down south of Cancun, Mexico. BG shot a 5 under 65 today trailing the leader Fred Funk who went low today with an 8 under 62. Keep it going Brian:)

Brian Gay
 

He's making a run for trophy (good second round). The leaders are at -9 and he's at -8. He had a bogey free second round. If he stays in the mix today, he'll have as good a shot as anyone.

Moving Day
 

This is Brian's ninth year on TOUR. He has yet to win but has had several 'near misses.' Statistically, his strongest round is the last, and his weakest is the third. One of these weeks he gets in position, goes low on Saturday and lifts crystal on Sunday.

He's in position, and today is Saturday.

After 3 Rounds
 

BG shot even 70 today...while remaining in the top 10 ...most of the others went under par today with Skip Kendall coming in with a 63 and jumping from tied for 49th to tied for 5th. These guys are just so good...Saturdays are moving days and you just have to go under to stay even or way under to rise to the top.

BG likes Sundays and we'll be watching to see if low 60's is possible...if it's a calm day, anything can happen...it will be fun to see.

Another Perspective
 

The Mayakoba Golf Classic got a bit tougher today as the wind picked up and most players struggled to meet or break par. Brian birdied the 18th for his even par 70 and is T-7. It is true that 7 of the Top Ten players went under par, including 2 of the 3 who are now tied with him. However, Brian's 70 beat or tied 50 of the 62 other players who made the cut. :salut:

Bad Day At Black Rock
 

The day started right when Brian birdied the second and moved into solo 4th place. Then the wheels came off the tracks.

Over the next eight holes, a very uncharacteristic run of three bogies and three double bogies dropped him into a tie for 50th. The PGA TOUR is one tough crowd, and when you fall down, you get trampled. As usual, though, Brian never quit, and he scored two birdies on the closing holes. His final round 77 put him -1 for the tournament and T-41.

We talked last night, but not today -- his cell phone service doesn't work outside the U.S. -- and TourCast didn't operate for this tournament, so I have no way of knowing what happened. I do know that it was a day with conditions such that, if you weren't on your game, things could definitely go south in a hurry. The TV announcers commented on the increased wind, and the cameras zoomed in on the boats rocking amid the rough seas and whitecaps just offshore. Nevertheless, he still lost ground to the field.

Personally, I view the round as "just one of those things," nothing more than a professional athlete's bad day. The round was a statistical outlier, a throwaway. Learn from it, yes. But do not be overly concerned. It happens to the best players in the game from time to time: No one is immune.

Next up: The Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida...

At all levels of golf one can have a day when one bad thing leads to another and ruins your score for the day. That's golf

I am looking forward to some better days from Brian in the weeks to come. It is great to have someone associated with this website to look out for on the PGA tour.
