Steering in Putting
 

See what you think about this... With ARC PUTTING, which is actually putting on an INCLINED PLANE... there should not be STEERING. The CLUBFACE is SQUARE(to the ball) only at IMPACT.

With PUTTING UP AND DOWN THE LINE... which is like PUTTING ALONG A BASEBOARD... there is, and should be, STEERING. Here the clubface is Square or Nearly Square(to the ball) throughout the Stroke.

There is steering if you are using your arms to make the putter go straight down the line.

NOT if you set up with the cervaical spine horizontal(or close to) to the surface, and rotate the shoulders around the spine, whilst 'keeping' the hands/arms relatively quiet.

Also, if I understand the putting arc correctly, it 'asks' a certain inclined plane of you, and if you don't have a good understanding of which plane you wish to use, or you don't have a qualified putting instructor teaching you, you perhaps are more likely to run into steering issues,due to the myriad of potential planes that you could fall into, rather than the reverse roll proceedure that you're implying with your post.

Many Strokes
 

There are many kinds of Putting Strokes, however, I think they can be divided into 2 broad groups. Those that putt on an (1)INCLINED PLANE or ARC, and (2) those that putt UP AND DOWN THE LINE(PUTTING ALONG A BASEBOARD).

The Loren Roberts type stroke is the one that looks to be INTENTIONAL STEERING to me. Scott Hoch is another that looks similar to this. This is obviously a WAY of putting that can work very well. Some of these players also probably HOOD the club.

The ARC PUTTERS, like Jay Haas, are putting on an INCLINED PLANE, and should NOT Steer. The rules for them are very similar to a full golf stroke, except I believe that through the IMPACT INTERVAL the face should be SQUARE AT IMPACT rather than at SEPARATION.

Could be Vertical Only Hinge Action . . . . Dual Hinge Action means the club is On-Plane . . . . Vertical Only is off-plane but still the left wrist is vertical basic plane of motion and not inclined plane.

Also remember in putting the face has way more to do with direction than the delivery line because the ball is only on the face for a relatively short distance and not really compressed much. Therefore the venturi effect isn't really in play too much according to Homer Kelley. You can actually hit an inside out cut shot putting and if the face is square to the line of flight as separation the ball with go straight even if the path is close to 45 degrees crossline.
