clearing the right hip

In homers book as well as posts by Yoda there is the necessity for clearing the right hip in the angle of approach. I am not sure I am doing that enough with the limited lower body motion. Does that mean I need to have my stance closed at address?

hi davel

Check out this post and the illustrations provided by metallion:

Dunno if this helps, but my understanding is that clearing the hip is essential to make room for a inside to out impact and thus a divot pointing right of the target.

If your divots are pointing the right way you may not have to worry about whether your hips clear or not.

During a session with Yodasluke he had me trying to hit the ball to a target well right of the original target - but with the same setup. Still my divots were still out to in (throwayway in my case).

He than said that some players will subconciously clear their hip when asked to do that, but I did not. Then he had me conciously clear my right hip and we also went through the Hula Hula. My divots became straight.

Since then I feel confident I know how. The amount of practice will determine when.

I understand what the pictures are showing but in my case I am trying to pivot off the left leg only. The amound of right hip turn would be minimal. I feel I have to make a over the top move to get my right elbow to pass thru. Maybe Yoda or Ted might have some advise.

Pre turn hips for hitting

Ted or yoda

You both are familar with my hitting pattern to date. Could you explain if I need to do anything special to have the clearance for my right hip since I don't turn it if I stay on my left side.I understand what the pictures are showing but in my case I am trying to pivot off the left leg only. Dave,

First of all, do not use the Angle of Approach procedure. Its Delivery Line will require a pre-cleared Right Hip. Instead, use the Straight Plane Line (10-5-A). It does not require the pre-cleared Hip and offers a little more tolerance in dealing with the Right Hip-Right Elbow conflict.

Second, experiment with a bit more Waist Bend, especially with the longer Clubs (you probably already have enough with the Short Irons). This also will give your Right Elbow more room to pass and thus increase your ability to Trace the Plane Line.

Davel,
From your posts it seems Yoda has seen your swing...I do not know Ted personally, but I am sure he is spot on as well.

Maybe you need to simplify it some. For myself, sometimes I would read into something too much and over do it.

I think of clearing the right hip as simply allowing the hips to move enough so that you keep the club on plane - you maintain a straight line relationship to the plane line. Perhaps you can focus on your hands and those alignments - and wallah! - the hips will clear automatically.

Just a thought.

I asked for yoda or ted special because I am a rear leg above knee amputee so my hips don't function as they would naturally do. They have seen me swing and I wanted to make sure that the preclear hips in the book was not a problem.
