Case for thinner grips?

I have found that when I grip down a bit my grips fit very snugly under the heel pad and the first knuckle of the index finger...spot where the 6th finger would be! Does this suggest that my grips are too thick?

Even though a lot has been said about thin vs thicker grips I'm hesitant to make the switch. I've swung a few clubs with slightly thicker grips and they feel really good. I feel more attached to the club or something. I play with standard.

Has anyone made the switch to thicker or thinner grips? What do you think of them?

I tried thinner grips once---and found that the club was slipping in my hands too much. Wore out a grip in about 7 days. Back to standard for me.

Give it a Go

This is my own experience and it may or may not apply to others. As an experiment, I ran some thinner grips for about 3 months. I was able to sense PP#2 better, but didn't feel like I had as much roll control with the left wrist. It was a good experience simply to be able to "get to know" pressure point #2 but wasn't worth the lack of clubface control.

Now that I'm back to my standard grips, I haven't lost the feel for #2. Once you get it, it doesn't go away.

Its early enough in the season that you can experiment a bit. Why not?

I agree that now is the time to experiment. I just re-gripped everything with standard after playing mid-size for the last 2 or 3 years. The feel is different ........ almost like my hands/wrists feel a tad more "lively" but with no apparent loss of face control after going back to standard size.

So far so good, will decide in February if they stay for the entire season.

Hmm? Is mid size larger than standard size? When I tried larger than my size, the right arm Flying Wedge seemed less wobbly.

I believe Golf Pride shows their mid-sized to by +1/16" compared to their standard. Many of the guys I play golf with have picked my clubs up and the initial reaction is "what's up with the big grips?" But a few eventually switched over to them as they start to appreciate the "secure" feel it gives you once you get used to them.

I think Yoda is using mid-sized grips.

I think he does too.

I'm going to have them installed and give it a try.

Grips and Wedges

A year ago, at the PGA show, Leadbetter said that many or the
Tour Pros were using thinner grips on their Wedges for better
feel?

Really? I would think the opposite. I would think that thicker grips would help stabilize the wrists and contribute to more control, but maybe thinner would allow more feel.

Mittens II

My angle was with regards to the grip "fitting" into the "hook of hamate" under the heel pad. I feel that the grip is more secure when it fits into that little slot. That tends to happen when I am gripping down a bit. My grips are standard. Interestingly, a thicker grip feels better in the right hand. It is difficult (for me at least) to duplicate the feel I get gripping the dowel in the palm of my right hand...the left thumb ain't a dowel ya know. Perhaps a reverse tapered grip will do!:eyes:

Bust out a Buster, Buster!

I was just kidding about the reverse taper idea! :eyes: Check out Bustergrips.com.
I was swinging a baseball bat the other day...just goofing around. As with almost everything I put in my hands I always set my flying wedges! I noticed that my hands fit quite nicely on the grip of the bat...thinner to thicker. I am an atypical lemming so it got me to thinking.

As Annikan says the grip is an evolutionary process! I recall listening to Jack Nicklaus saying to grip the right hand in the fingers...to "add some snap" to it I believe he said. Like Yoda says if you are gripping the club in the fingers of the right hand "...you don't have it." Thinner up top...thicker down below makes sense. You can't have everything!

Pity, that I regripped my clubs recently! I am going to give the reverse taper grips a whirl. The buster grips were originally for a guy with arthritis. They come in pink as well. Good for hitters perhaps, Daryl?:laughing9

When I had my new clubs built ,my clubfitter measured my hands{wrist to mid& mid finger length}.I have long fingers and long hands. He built me a great set of clubs-but the thing I noticed most were the grips.
If you buy a new set of grips they need cleaning-they probably still have the release compound from the moulds on them.
My grips were more tacky than any other grip I have ever felt-I asked my man why the grips were so good ;-
"They are NEW and CLEAN" was the reply. My advice is to read Tom Wishons book--it gives advice on cleaning grips which could transform your game!:eyes:

I've heard of people playing with them. Really. I don't know if their out of the Loony Bin yet or had their Clubs Re-gripped since then. Don’t do it. It sounds like a crazy idea. Keep your Grips. Extensor Action. But I am considering adding a piece of tape to thicken them a smudge. :)

Sorry man, someone had to tell you "no". :)

okie 01-25-2008 12:40 AM

I will not go quietly into the night

I will try to get a grip! Too late...I have ONE on the way! I'm going to put it on a "spare" for Justin. Just in case it works! I believe that Ralph Maltby varies the thickness of his own grips, but not uniformly i.e. he adds a bit for where the right hand meets the grip. Ultimately, I agree that with good alignments and extensor action you ought to be able to pure most anything. I guess I am still harping on the idea that given the importance of gripping under the heel pad with the left hand it should not be the thickest part of the grip...unless you have bangers for fingers (ask Neil) I will sacrifice an old Titleist 962 B 7 iron to find out! Then...the revolution will begin.
