Golf Stroke Engineering MOM in Sweden

MOM = Meeting Of Minds.

Background
About a month ago I got a PM from h.kan simply asking "Who are you?".

I revealed some of my less sensible personal details :-O and so did he. After mutual verification that none of us would find it wozzy to sit around a campfire discussing the #3PP we both felt it would be reasonably safe to go for an IRL contact without further embarassment. ;-) For me, the Bash at Destin was coming up. So was getting in a few lessons with Ben Doyle. I felt it would probably be more fruitful talking again after Destin. I remember saying to h.kan: "I may return from the US and never wanting to hear about TGM again".

Destin came up. It was great to meet fellow swede and GSEM henning and see how profound his TGM knowledge was. It was great to have an opportunity to gain lots of valuable input from Yoda, Chuck Evans, Carey Mumford, golfingrandy and many others. Not to mention the great experience of learning more about TGM from some of the greatest - if not the greatest - G.O.L.F. and golf instructors on the planet.

In other words I did not return from the US not wanting to hear about TGM again. Quite the contrary. Since that day not a day has passed without spending some time to learn more.

Called h.kan. We had our first telephone conversation. As you may understand we ended up spending far more than an hour on the phone. Each of us telling about our respective path to TGM, experiences and interests. We decided to arrange a MOM, i.e. this event.

Most of you will probably say: "You need an AI". I do not disagree, but I will say that we first need to create a network of interested individuals. While probably every pro is aware of TGM, it is still rather unknown to the general public. If we succeed in creating a network of interested individuals you can trust it will not take long until the first TGM event for amateurs will be organized. With A.I.'s. This is a VERY low cost event. (We are talking USD 25 !!!).

So here is is:

Call for bent right wrists!!!

There are four of us and room for a maximum of 10.
Pre-registered: h.kan, lage, rolj, metallion
Even if it'll only be the four of us - we'll go ahead.

Entry requirements
Each person registering must comply by passing a telephone interview  This is order to ensure that participants have a (low but required) minimum of knowledge about TGM, such as being able to express what PP#3 is. The expression does not have to be correct, but need participants to be "on" the subject. :-)

Reason for this is that we have only allocated one day and will neither have the time or ability to introduce TGM to those without previous knowledge.

Location and time
Svartinge Golf, Monday July 25 2005. Svartinge is located just north of Stockholm. The homepage is http://www.svartingegolf.se The club director and pro are informed & I am very happy that they are positive to running the event.

Amenities
Clubhouse, Conference room, Shortgame practice area, Driving range
I can't guarantee that there will be a grass driving range that day. Periodically they need to let it recover & mats are used.

Language
Language during the event will mainly be Swedish or "Scandinavian" if we end up having participants from Norway, Denmark or Finland joining in. (This announcement is made in English just to let some more people know what we are up to.)

Program

09.00 Gathering in the conference room.
Equipment: PC with DVD player, Video player, Video projector
1-hour discussion about TGM. Individual experiences. Maybe a peek at DVD's and tapes brought in.

10.30 Off to shortgame green
Equipment: Dowels, plane lasers, dual track, dowels, Tac-Tic's
Power package and accumulators, basic motion, acquired motion

12.00 Lunch

13.30 Shortgame green
Continued from pre-lunch.

14.00 Down to the range
Equipment: Video Camera, tripod
Swings recorded

15.00 Back to conference room
Equipment: Video analysis SW (V1 Home Edition)
Swing analysis. (Non-professional. But it will be fun).
Where do we go from here?

Cost
The cost for 1-day rent of the conference room is SEK 1000. The cost for that will be shared between the participants. Other that that you will have to get your own lunch & pay SEK 20 for each bucket of balls. That's it.

What to I bring with me?
Your interest in TGM. Any practice equipment you feel like bringing. Any DVD or video you like - as long as it is TGM-related. Let me know if you need a yellow book. Henning has provided me with a few.

What to expect?
Meeting people. Do not expect receiving professional instruction! I would have loved to see henning participate, but we think it is premature to bring in professional guidance at this time. If we are able to establish network we can go ahead & arrange any event we'd like, arrange to participate in events in the US or whatever.

Entry procedure
Send me a PM with your telephone number. I will call you and let you TAKE THE TEST 8) :D

Parentes:

Summary

Headcount
In the end we were only three. :-$ (Don't laugh!). I actually did not expect that we'd be able to gather more than 5, so the showup was ok. The advantage was a lot of airtime for each of us. As individuals we wouldn't probably have gained more TGM knowledge from the experience should we have a bigger group. But it would have been good to see more people there & forming a bigger network. Three is not really (yet) a network, but its more than one.

Marketing was very limited. Just this post plus a late post at Chucks forum. No linking from Swedish forums. The TEST was neccessary but may have caused some to opt out.

In retrospect I am happy we were not 10. Would have required a lot more planning and management.

Outcome

We had a great time. To me the highlights of the day were:
  • Discussion. As always it was interesting to hear the different experiences we had when approaching the book. We discussed the three imperatives, many other issues and sort of established "common ground" for the rest of the day.
  • Training aid session. We had a go at mainly impact bags, plane lasers and a dual track. Summing it up I'd say the plane laser session was the most conclusive. Probably since it was the experience most obviously connecting back to the "straight plane line" imperative.
  • Shortgame session. Could see some big aha experinces as we went through the "zero-out-PP3" chipping technique. Not only that. Was it rolj's first or second TGM chip that holed out? =D> \:D/
  • Video analysis. What we did was to record all swings DTL and FO. Then move in to the conference room & fire up the projector, V1 analyzer and get the vids loaded. None of us were skilled video analyzers, but we did not need to be. All of us had fundamental flaws that were easy to pick. We analyzed each swing in a group session & eventually reached consensus regarding the 2 main defects in each swing. Guess we spent 20 minutes on each swing. Then we headed back to the driving range to supervise eachother as the changes were imposed. I'd say it was very conclusive for all of us. Not the least since we had a couple of pro swings to compare to. I think we did a reasonably good job finding the flaws, but AI support would have been (understatement) handy as we headed back to the range to eliminate the flaws & improve on non-optimal swings. One thing is for sure: We did a much better job being six eyes, than we would have done individually trying to analyze our own swings.

Towards end of day I talket to Henning who was in town. He'd just finished a presentation with a group of Swedish pros. Me, h.kan & henning had a brief sidewalk meeting in Stockholm & talked over our experiences as well as hennings. I got the 3 additional yellow books I ordered. One to be donated to the club (as a thank you), one extra for me and one "just in case". :D

Future
I just know that all of us will be busy tweaking with our swings for quite some time. We will also be busy reading more TGM and learning more through this forum. Time will tell what the next move will be. Either another MOM, an AI session, a trip to the US or...

Time will tell

Beginnings

The Swedish MOM was a terrific iniative, Metallion, and I congratulate you and your hardy band of G.O.L.F. pioneers who made it happen. From small acorns do giant oaks grow. I've got a feeling that this seminal congregation will be no exception.

Allting står ju i denna lilla bok.

[-X Right Forearm Pickup... :D

Hmm
Det får bli ett till möte snart :)

Thom 07-28-2005 07:16 PM

Måste veta i tillräckligt god tid bara..
