Athens Regional Foundation Classic / Nationwide Tour / April 16-19, 2009
Eight players I've trained -- some more than others -- are in the field this week:
Trevor Dodds
Scott Dunlap
Robin Freeman
John Kimbell
Neal Lancaster
Ian Leggatt
John Riegger
Jay Williamson
I was on the tee earlier in the week and spent most of my time with John Riegger, Jay and Neal. John's hitting the ball as well as ever and is the Nationwide's leader in Scrambling. Jay has Exempt Status on the PGA TOUR, but was 5th alternate into the Verizon, so he came to Athens for the week. Neal is currently ranked #3 in Nationwide GIR. A pretty fair crew!
I also reconnected with John Kimbell, who I introduced to these pages in this post http://lynnblakegolf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6437. Fresh off his T-2 finish in last week's Stonebrae Classic at TPC San Francisco Bay, he was excited to tell me about his improved consistency and how his new alignments had turned things around. One look at his swing proved he had learned his lessons well: his Address alignments were perfect, and he was dead-On Plane through Impact. He's taking two weeks off after next week's South Georgia Classic, and we'll get together again.
So with John Riegger leading the Nationwide Tour and Brian Gay currently 10th on the PGA tour in scrambling, you must have one heck of a short game methodology?
John Riegger closed with a fabulous 6-under par 66 for 277 (-11) to claim T-4. After his round, he settled in and watched buddy Brian Gay continue his dissection of the Verizon Heritage field.
John and I texted back and forth throughout Brian's round, both of us marveling at the performance of the day. I called John about two hours after the round, then handed the phone to Brian (who had finished his media duties and was now in the clubhouse with about 100 of his closest friends ). Brian backed into a corner, and they talked for about ten minutes, the first time Brian was able to fend off the crowd since he holed out on 18.
Anyway, it was a truly great day for John (who moved from #45 to #20 on the Nationwide Money List), and combined with Brian's heroics at Harbour Town, it was a truly great day for LBG.
